Why do we need different standards and protocols?

Each protocol is used for different purposes. HTTP is the best for serving websites, but for a server that is primarily storage with frequent uploading/downloading of large files, FTP is much more useful--you can make user accounts, allow users to access certain files/folders, and easily upload without any additional software.
