How do I access my website to redesign it?

I am a complete novice to web design but I am trying to access my website to redesign it. The host and web developer that created the site failed a few years ago and now does not exist. I have FTP details but I'm not sure what to do with them. Any info for how a novice might do this or who to contact would be greatly appreciated.
